Ethics in Motion:
 Feminist Ethics and #MeToo

Ethics in Motion: Feminist Ethics and #MeToo (EMFEM) is a research project hosted by the Centre for Ethics at the University of Iceland, funded by the Icelandic Research Fund from 2023 to 2026. The project examines the impact of #MeToo and related movements on moral values and norms appearing in recent debates in and around the #MeToo movement in Iceland. The first #MeToo wave in 2017 is compared to a second wave that took place in Iceland in 2021.

The Icelandic #MeToo movement is compared to other global contexts through a network of international researchers, an international conference, and an anthology on #MeToo and moral values. The project thus impacts and supports a vibrant and ongoing sociopolitical movement that may still make considerable changes within various global contexts.

From a more general perspective, the goal of the project is to examine the potential interplay between social movements, moral norms, and ethical theories, focusing on altered concepts and perceptions of responsibility.

The project leaders are Eyja M. J. Brynjarsdóttir, professor of philosophy at the University of Iceland, and Nanna Hlín Halldórsdóttir, research specialist at the Centre for Ethics at the University of Iceland. Other participants include PhD students in philosophy and applied ethics as well as various collaborators both from the University of Iceland and from research institutions in Europe and N-America.
